Lower Egypt · Where the plateau keeps time

Giza at First Light

Private causeways, the Sphinx before the gates open, and camel tracks into the quiet western desert.

Introduction

We reach the plateau before the coaches, walk the causeways with Egyptologists who have excavated there, and keep every circle small enough to stand in silence beside the Great Pyramid. Evenings return to Old Cairo for dinner in family homes.

The last wonder standing

Of the seven wonders of the ancient world, only the Great Pyramid of Khufu still stands. It was the tallest building on earth for nearly four thousand years, and up close its blocks are the size of small cars.

The plateau is busiest between ten and three. Arrive at opening time and you will have the causeways and the Valley Temple of Khafre almost to yourself.

Beyond the pyramids

Walk down to the Sphinx along the causeway the funeral procession once used, then ride west into the desert for the view of all nine pyramids in a row.

In the evening the sound and light show tells the plateau’s story from seats facing the Sphinx, an old-fashioned and still moving way to end the day.

Practical notes

Tickets to the inside of the Great Pyramid are limited each day and sold separately.

  • Agree the price of any camel or horse ride before you climb on.
  • Bring water and a hat: there is little shade on the plateau.
  • The Grand Egyptian Museum is ten minutes away and pairs well with a morning at the pyramids.
